Yep. Nikon also thinks (I seem to remember reading somewhere) that the
unevenness in the emulsion in most frames will prevent Newton's rings from
occurring, and you shouldn't need the masks most of the time. Wrong.

Anyway, more power to you if you can get good scans with AN glass under the
film. It's got to be the easiest way to get corner-to-corner sharp scans.

What I'd like is a holder with no lower glass at all, and inserts (for each
frame size) that support the frame at all four edges as the AN glass presses
down from above. But I've never had the energy to figure out how to make
such a beast.

I tested this with my Cezanne. I taped all four edges of a 35mm frame
of Tech Pan emulsion down to the bottom of an anti-Newton glass sheet.
The result was that I really couldn't tell the difference between this
method and scanning through the glass.
