I am wanting to clean the mirror and dust off the lens inside the coolscan 9000. I went
through some older posts and found a link

http://www.marginalsoftware.com/LS8000Notes/cleaning_the_optics_of_the

but this link no longer works. Is there an updated link with any info or does anybody have
any instructions or advice.

Thanks in advance.

I followed these instructions a few years back and it was quite
straightforward, although I've been taking things apart since I was 5
years old ... not always with reassembly in mind.

You do need to be slow and methodical and note where things came from
and how they fit back together. Taking pictures along the way could
help. Cleaning the mirror is the easy part. It was frustrating to
note that the device was designed with the mirror facing up, which
means dust will naturally fall onto the mirror. I used to often leave
a film holder in the machine with the door open and wasn't real
careful out cleaning dust off the holder itself. Now I know that any
dust on the holder can fall down on to the mirror and I always close
the door and shut the machine off when not in use. Finally, I also
taped over all the vent holes on the unit. I don't use it in a
production environment, so it's never going to get heated up, so
ventilation doesn't seem necessary - more important I keep it sealed
from any dust. I can also easy remove the tape (I used clear packing
tape) it if I decided to sequester myself for a weekend of scanning.

The mirror had a noticeable film of very fine dust and the cleaning
made all the difference - getting rid of banding and hazy blacks and
poor image definition.

Good Luck
Nick

I had my LS-8000 apart a few years ago, using the instructions
that Dane posted. It turned out OK but it was nerve-wracking.

There are about a half-dozen small connector pairs that have to
be separated on disassembly and re-connected on assembly.
There's absolutely no spare length on the associated cables,
and the connectors themselves are small and tight. IIRC, one
or two of the cables are "printed film" and these always make
me very nervous.

It's a job that involves dexterity, steady hands, etc.

That's because your link is truncated: here's the proper link:

<http://www.marginalsoftware.com/LS8000Notes/cleaning_the_optics_of_the_ls.htm>;

(I've put angle brackets at either end to keep the URL from being
broken -- hope that works.)

And here are its constituent parts:

http://www.marginalsoftware.com/
LS8000Notes/
cleaning_the_optics_of_the_ls.htm

If all else fails:

1. http://www.marginalsoftware.com/
2. Click link "Notes on the LS-8000/9000"
3. Scroll to the bottom of that page
4. Click link "Cleaning the LS-8000, LS-9000"
