Kim,
Any company that can afford to sponsor music concerts with top artists, major league baseball games, many other sports events and advertise during prime time on TV, I would consider a large and successful company. Granted, not as large as GM.
We have an Imacon Scanner at work, which spends most of it's use archiving 4x5 film. I don't find that it scans 6x6 or 35mm any better than my Nikon Scanners (or Minolta Dimage). Years back the Imacon was the scanner to own, now a Epson V750 will match it.
Hasselblad recently released two new medium format scanners (I think they start at $10k).
Has anyone here phoned Nikon sales and asked about availability? I'm sure they would be happy to let you know who they recently shipped to or if there is a production halt.
regards,
Rick

Nikon has never been a huge company. If you want to see a huge
company try looking at Canon, or GM or Toyota. It makes no difference
if you look at their other product lines, the Nikon Photographic
Company itself is not a huge company. Is it a solid company could not
tell you, is it finally catching up and actually surpassed Canon, yes
in one area.
Yes if you look hard enough you will find one used, a lot of
photographers after scanning their images go ahead and put theirs up
for sale. I have thought about that myself, but sometimes it is just
easier to scan on my Nikon then scan on my Imacon especially the 35mm
transparencies since I do not own a 35mm mount for my Imacon.
I would bet that the digital age caught more then a few people a
little off guard as to how fast it was embraced and so quickly it
became main stream. It made no difference if they were behind the
movement, it moved extremely fast as companies move. Only the largest
of the photographic companies was able to use their inhouse resources
to move things along just a few steps behind the medium format cameras.
