Yes. If you don't, it complains. I also failed to
include
that I had tried it both on a system remote from the dhcp
server and
on the actual platform where the dhcp server runs and it
behaves the
same way.

Agreed. They work the same way, but "omshell
<<EOF" is a bit
more standard.
I have come up with an expect script that pretends to
manually
invoke omshell, making it a little easier to see where
trouble starts
and it appears that I am not issuing the correct command
after sending
the key. A modified output follows:
$ omshell
> server 192.168.1.20
> port 7911
> key OMAPI "SECRET_BASE64_STUFF"
> connect
obj: <null>
There's where things get confusing. I did a Google search
using
omapi+examin+dhcp+lease
as search criteria. It netted 14 hits, none of which
contained
so much as a scrap of linear "The cat ate the
canary." information,
the kind that takes 3 or 4 lines to print and teaches one
more than 40
pages of theory or at least makes the 40 pages of theory go
down a lot
easier.
