Yes, the direct export source sends the data in a format
which alerts
EndNote to use a particular filter, which is almost always
RefMan RIS. And
yes, you have to have that filter in your filters folder, if
you are using
EndNote 8 or 9. In EndNote 7 and earlier versions, the
import is handled by
a routine built into the EndNote software.
If you want to see what sort of data the source is sending
to EndNote, go to
Windows Explorer. Click on Tools>Folder Options, and then
select the "File
Types" tab. Browse down the list of extensions to RIS.
You will see that
these files normally open with Web Export Helper. You can
temporarily change
that to WordPad.
Now when you perform the direct export, the references will
open in their
tagged format in WordPad. If you are using EndNote 8 or 9,
you can compare
that with the templates in the RefMan RIS filter, and
probably work out why
your references aren't importing correctly.
