It would be more easily achieved by entering the Smith
citation, then
Edit Citation(s) and put

J. Brown, personal communication, 1 March 2006`;

(with a space after the semicolon) in the Prefix field. I
assume you
have entered the : 45 in the Suffix field.

However note that if the Smith citation is to (say) Adams,
the citations
will be out of alphabetical order contrary to most styles. 
To comply you could enter the Brown citation into EndNote as
a Personal
Communication reference type.

Also note that omitting the ` before the ; causes Endnote X
to crash.
