Hi Alicia,

An authenticating proxy comes into play when you are using
http (as
opposed to Z39.50) connection files. The only http (web
based)
connection files that I know of are PubMed and Web of
Knowledge. What
happens is that when you use the connection file EndNote
uses whatever
proxy is setup to be used with Internet Explorer. This is
usually fine -
EndNote detects your proxy and passes you out onto the
internet so that
the search can be done. If, however, your site is using a
proxy that
prompts you for a username and password before you can
access the
internet (aka an authenticating proxy) then http connection
files via
EndNote don't work - it looks like EndNote is trying to
connect via the
proxy but the proxy is prompting for a username and password
but EndNote
doesn't know how to display the username and password dialog
so nothing
happens.

Apparently all this used to work in EndNote 7 but it's
failed on
versions since then. I have heard that ISI apparently fixed
a bug that
was in EndNote 7 that subsequently broke connecting via
authenticating
proxies (i.e. they claim you shouldn't have been able to do
it in the
first place). So now we're stuck - our only workaround is to
use the we
interface of the database and export the records from
there.

Hi Damien,
Are you using a Mac? Just curious as I didn't read that
mentioned.

Also, Simon could you explain a bit more about the
authenticating proxy
and EndNote X? Are you talking about Macs or PCs or does it
not matter?

This is a problem we've been seeing frequently and would
appreciate
hearing more.

Thank!
Alicia Livinski

Hi Damien,

Do you use an authenticating proxy to connect to the
internet? EndNote X
can't handle connecting directly to PubMed if you're using
an
authenticating proxy.

Subject: EndNote X connection problem

Hi All,

I have upgraded to EndNote X from EndNote 7 some time ago. I
can't
connect directly to PubMed like I used to with EndNote 7.
Several of my
colleagues are having the same difficulty.

Can anyone offer any suggestions to rectify this?

Thanks,

Damien
