Agreed. However, the sample paper (Fig. 5.1, p. 312 of 5th
ed.) is in
conflict:
"(for reviews, see M. W. Eysenck, 1977, and Goodenough,
1976)".
The latter resembles more closely Robert's example that
triggered this
discussion. There are 2 references only, both after
"for reviews",
whereas the p. 212 example contains the further complexity
of the Minor
(2001) reference.
This seems to return us to Robert's question given that
other
workarounds either are inconsistent with APA manual or
create problems
of their own.
In absence of resolution, I'll opt for the semicolon.

the "and" (using
prefixes), but
how do I get rid of the semicolon that automatically appears
between
