Briefly (quoting from Microsoft), handles are references to
files,
ports, Registry keys, synchronization primitives, threads,
and
processes. If an application uses too many handles, the
system can
become unstable and it is even possible for XP to "run
out of resources"
(we hoped that problem had been eliminated in NT and later
OS's) which typically means handles. The number of handles
that are
considered worrisome seems to be a matter of opinion. But
even a few
thousand is normally OK. I've seen IE use over 10K without
(noticeable)
problems. Others say that over a couple thousand will bring
your app or
system down. Sounds like EN is not a handle hog.
