Going against what appears to be the tide of opinion, I
actually prefer
to use separate libraries for each paper, for a few
reasons:
-I prefer being able to find references immediately by eye
rather than
having to search the library for them (which doesn't take
much less time
than searching PubMed).
-It eliminates the task of determining which references you
already have
and which you have to obtain.
-You don't need to worry as much about, for example, which
"Wilson 2006"
reference you need to insert in a particular place, because
your library
probably contains only the particular Wilson 2006 reference
you need.
Naturally, there are times when this approach is a handicap,
such as
when I need a reference that has to be entered by hand, such
as a
reference to a book chapter, that I may or may not already
have in one
of my EndNote libraries. I used to be able to deal with this
problem by
using the Search function in Windows to search all of my
EndNote
libraries, but it seems that some change has been made to
EndNote,
Windows, or both that has made it impossible to search
within EndNote
libraries.
