I've learned to live with errant spaces (using en. 7
through 9 with
customised Chicago styles on WinXP); I've set up Endnote to
end each
reference-type with a zero-width space (U200b), and can then
search and
replace for <space><0-w-space> after removing
codes. It also has the
advantage of letting me cycle through my en. references by
simply searching
for a zero-width space (useful for unlinking fields while
retaining
cross-references in word).
Does it help to replace *all* spaces (even in names of
fields) with link
adjacents?

Subject: Space at end of repeated citations
I find that repeated (or abbreviated) citations in footnotes
in the Chicago
style contain an unwanted space at the end, where I might
want to insert my
own page range or punctuation. How do I get rid of it?
I find it in both books and journals, in both Chicago 14thA
and Chicago
15thA. I'm using Word X and Endnote 7 for Mac. I don't
use Cited Pages,
adding the page range outside the inserted citation. I have
preferences set
for repeated citations to show Surname and Short Title, with
no special
handling for consecutive footnotes (e.g., Smith, History of
China).
I've customised styles a bit, and understand forced
independence and linked
adjacent text, but can see no errant spaces to get rid of.
I reproduce the style here for reference. For clarity I've
put asterisks
where a Link Adjacent Text diamond is:
Author, Title|,*trans.*Translator|,*Edition*ed.|,*Number of
Volumes*vols.|,*vol.*Volume|,*Series
Title|*(|City Publisher,*Y
ear|)|,*Cited Pages[no space at end]
I'd be grateful for any advice.
Shalom,
Ross Langmead
