This is a call to kernel lovers,

http://maemo.org/platform/docs/howtos/howto_kernel_guide_bora.html

Any suggestions to improve this documentation? If you see a clear gap please tell us.

PS: If you know about a clear gap in our developer documentation, tell us as well. Yes, I know there has been a lot of feedback in this sense. Links to archived emails or bug reports are also welcome, if you don't mind.

I suggest that you don't advocate following steps of manual
editing of
.config files. It is considered as bad practice even though
it works.

-------------snip------------------
"Next, start the vi editor (you can also edit the file
outside the
scratchbox with your favorite editor of choice) and do the
modifications to the .config file."

....

#

Note: in the .config file it says that don't edit the file
but in this
case it is OK to edit file.
# Next, run make oldconfig so that the configurations become
effective"
-------------snip------------------

Why on the world we can't do "make menuconfig" and
just copy sections
of .config to explain what changes happens to it after we
selected
particular options as "module/in-built to
kernel"?

You can, but there was a bug with linking ncurses. Maybe
that's why it
is not mentioned in the document at all. Not sure if this is
still in
3.0 ARM target. It was still there when I recompiled RX-34
kernel but
I'm not sure which maemo release I used. Fix is somewhere in
this list
or you can do the make menuconfig phase outside of
scratchbox.

Noticed this some time ago. Thanks. Looks like is is based
on or
contains similar info like
ht
tp://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowTo_KernelCompilation

Maybe you can link the wiki page as non-authoritatiove
source of further
info if it is possible to link wiki from official guides.

As for missing stuff - some warning about proprietary wi-fi
module in
initfs which needs to be compatible with custom kernel would
be nice.
People may be surprised when using different toolchain or
kernel version
string and end with reboot loop. Or better add info about
how to
recompile cx3110x module too (including link to source).
That would be
much appreciated. I think there is/was some EABI trickery
here so it is
not so straightforward.

Maybe you could also mention where the kernel on device is
stored
(/dev/mtd2) so people could figure out the size limit
(2MB?).
