Thread: N800: Loss of touch screen sensitivity/pressure detection

N800: Loss of touch screen sensitivity/pressure detection

A number of users, including myself, have reported a loss of
touch screen sensitivity which can be visualised by using
the Maemopad+ application. In my case, I've lost touch
screen sensitivity in the right hand part of the screen
covered by the vertical scroll bar meaning that page
scrolling by dragging the thumbtrack is a hit and miss
affair - I may have to click the stylus on the screen up to
3 or 4 times before a hit is registered.

I've filed bug 1069[1] to address this issue (referencing an
ITT forum discussion[2] with various Maemopad+ images), but
would be most interested if any Nokia developers could
comment on this phenomenon.

Is it a firmware issue (which can/will be fixed in a future
update) or is this a hardware issue?

Many thanks in advance!

Neil

Shot in the dark, but have you tried recalibrating your display? This was a problem for me on my old PalmPilot's and recalibrating usually solved the problem.

I have this exact problem too, I notice it very dramatically
when
using the newsreader. Recalibration doesn't change matters
at all in
my case.

I see this too when using the newsreader especially. I have
noticed
that if I just move the stylus around a little bit it helps.
If I try
in the same place I also see the need to hit it 3 or 4
times. Most
taps take the first time if I just move to a slightly
different
location on the scroll bar.

Agreed about the news reader - I assumed it was just another
problem with the news reader application as I could usually
drag an article up/down on the second page drag, but now I
realise it's most likely the touch screen not passing
through the drags.

The vertical scroll bar is for me the most frustrating
problem though - this affects every application, whereas the
patchy sensitivity I have in the middle of the screen
affects only those apps where I need to drag the page (eg.
the browser, news reader). Obviously the occasional button
press or list selection can also be ignored if it falls
within this defective area.

Re-calibrating, rebooting and reflashing have had no effect
(I'm running 2.2006.51-6, stock Nokia kernel).

Really need to know if this is firmware related (fixable) or
hardware (return to Nokia) - it seems fairly common.

I'm seeing something like this too. For me it occurs most
frequently
when I type my VNC Viewer password, which contains two 3s.
The first
3 is usually OK, but the second one hardly ever registers
until I've
tried 3 or 4 times.

Another case is navigating menus where the "mouse"
needs to be "held
down" the whole time (Emacs via VNC Viewer). Almost
always, I don't
get as far as the menu item that I want, because the N800
thinks I've
lifted the stylus up - when in fact it's still touching the
screen.

Would be great if this was a software problem, but my
current
impression is that something about the N800 screen is a lot
less good
than the 770.

Regards,
     Neil

Hi,
There are two issues at play here. One is firmware: the
touchscreen
handling was suboptimal in a few cases, mostly relating to
clicking
somewhere close to where you last clicked. Touching
significantly away
from it should make it better (i.e. don't press in the same
spot, twice
in a row).

The other is hardware: as far as I can tell, some
touchscreens just
don't have much sensitivity in that area, so we never get
the
appropriate events.

Cheers,
Daniel

Oh dear that's not good, I'm definately suffering from this
rather than the firmware issue - I can click on the left
part of the screen, then in the vertical scrollbar and the
latter is almost never registered.

Any idea if this is covered by warranty? Sounds like it
should be. I may have two N800s to return.

This has been fixed, and will be in the next firmware
update.

This is a hardware problem that I've been meaning to work
around in
software, but as it changes the queuing implementation yet
again (and
requires another timer, eep; also increases the potential
latency
somewhat, which is bad), I haven't got to it yet, so it
won't be in the
next firmware update.

Hmm.

Cheers,
Daniel

Honestly, I have no idea, and I'm not keen to have an
uninformed guess
in public, lest a torrent of returned devices be traced back
to my
encouragement.

Cheers,
Daniel
