Dear all,
does anybody know about the support for using the H/W 3D
capabilities of
the TI 2420 CPU on the N800?
thanks a lot,
Daniel

Yes: there's no support for hardware 3D on the N800.

Thanks, but we unfortunately don't have the time and
resources to do that.
We want to use the N800 in a project where 3D is of major
concern.
I know that the N800 is marketed as a internet browser but,
still the
CPU can do 3D and it is a shame that this potential is not
exposed.
Can somebody from Nokia confirm that 3D is an unwanted
feature on the
N800 and that it will not be added soon?
thanks,
Daniel

Can somebody from Nokia confirm that 3D is an unwanted feature on the N800 and that it will not be added soon? If
you search the archives, you'll see there's also a video bandwidth
problem related to the present hardware that may/does impose
restrictions on live video rendering, etc. My understanding is that if
the internal video memory were used, there would be enough bandwidth
for acceptable performance, but the internal memory is not large enough
to hold the full 800x480 display. The compromise was using external
memory to the chip, but that memory is slower and could only do maybe
15fps. I'm pretty sure this is why we haven't seen an OpenGL stack yet,
and why we probably won't see one any time soon.
Seek out the thread(s) "DVD content playback possible or not?" from the archives for more specifics. --Paul

This is not a tendencious question, is it?
3D is not an unwanted feature, since (as a principle) we
want to have
all the features making the tablets excel in Internet and
multimedia
experiences.
However, due to various factors the equation 3D + N800 +
Soon = Uneasy.
Specially if by "soon" you really mean soon.

ARE THE SPECS ON THE GPU AVAILABLE FOR FREE SOMEWHERE, OR
ARE THEY UNDER
NDA? I AM GUESSING THAT SINCE IT IS INTEGRATED INTO THE OMAP
PROCESSOR
THEN THE DATASHEETS FOR THAT SHOULD HAVE INFO ON 3D
ACCELERATION.. BUT
DATASHEETS DON'T SEEM TO BE AS READILY AVAILABLE NOWADAYS AS
THEY USED
TO..

I would expect that Nokia does have an OpenGL ES driver
driver from TI
since they probably provide something like that when buying
licenses to
build devices with this CPU. I downloaded the OMAP2420 Linux
release
from TI, but it also doesn't contain anything like that.
Seems as if H/W 3D is not open source compatible. Probably
since they
licensed the 3D core from PowerVR...

But the solution for the external framebuffer could also
belong to 3D.
One could render the 3d image to the internal framebuffer
and transfer
it via dma to the external one (which run in pixel doubling
mode to
provide full fps in 320x240 or in full resolution, than fps
is limited
to 15 fps.)

That is one reason indeed.
