Due to strong interest, the Association of College and
Research=20
Libraries (ACRL) along with the Association for Research=20
Libraries (ARL) will offer a second Institute on
Scholarly=20
Communication December 6-8, 2006, at Duke University,
Durham, NC.=20
The inaugural institute, being held at UCLA in July, had far
more=20
applicants than could be accommodated. The deadline for=20
application is August 15, 2006. Acceptance to the
Scholarly=20
Communication program is competitive and limited to 100=20
individuals.

The Friends of ACRL are supporting 4 scholarships to cover
the=20
$600 registration fee for the institute. Scholarships will
be=20
awarded to team member(s) from diverse backgrounds and
those=20
employed at smaller institutions or serving
professionally=20
underrepresented minorities. Awards will be determined
during the=20
application review and announced to recipients along with=20
acceptance to the Institute. Details on applying for a=20
scholarship are noted in the application.

During the institute, participants will expand their
knowledge of=20
scholarly communication issues by:

=B7 Building expertise for their libraries and campuses
=B7 Designing a collaborative program for their
institutions
=B7 Exploring strategies for creating systemic change
=B7 Discovering new approaches for engaging faculty

This jointly sponsored institute offers tools and techniques
to=20
build a scholarly communication program or move an existing
one=20
to the next level. Participants will assess their campus=20
environment before the institute and engage in 2 1/2
intensive=20
days of active learning. During the institute, participants
will=20
develop customized program plan components to implement at
their=20
home institutions.

The Institute sponsors are seeking participation from a
wide=20
range of academic libraries from community colleges to
large=20
research institutions. A competitive application process
will be=20
used to assemble a cohort for the December Institute.
Team=20
applications are encouraged (up to three participants from
a=20
campus), although individual applications will be
considered.=20
Larger institutions, especially, are encouraged to propose
teams=20
that reflect various institutional perspectives, such as=20
librarians, library administrators, faculty, campus=20
administrators, etc. Applicants should articulate realistic
goals=20
for a campus plan and demonstrate institutional support for,
or=20
readiness to support, a plan. Recognizing the challenges
smaller=20
institutions face in participating in the Institute and the
value=20
of their contributions to outreach efforts, small
institutions=20
will not be penalized in the selection process if they are
only=20
able to fund individual participants rather than teams.

Complete details about the program as well as the online=20
application form and instructions can be found at=20
www.ala.org/acrl/events (Click ACRL/ARL Institute on
Scholarly=20
Communication).

Applicants can direct questions concerning the program or=20
application process to Kara Malenfant at 312-280-2510;=20
kmalenfantala.org or Karla Hahn at 202-296-2296; karlaarl.org.

ACRL is a division of the American Library Association
(ALA),=20
representing more than 13,000 academic and research
librarians=20
and interested individuals. ACRL is the only individual=20
membership organization in North America that develops
programs,=20
products and services to meet the unique needs of academic
and=20
research librarians. Its initiatives enable the higher
education=20
community to understand the role that academic libraries
play in=20
the teaching, learning and research environments.

ARL is an association of over 120 of the largest research=20
libraries in North America. The member institutions serve
over=20
160,000 faculty researchers and scholars and more than 4
million=20
students in the U.S. and Canada. ARL's mission is to
influence=20
the changing environment of scholarly communication and
the=20
public policies that affect research libraries and the=20
communities they serve. ARL pursues this mission by
advancing the=20
goals of its member research libraries, providing leadership
in=20
public and information policy to the scholarly and higher=20
education communities, fostering the exchange of ideas
and=20
expertise, and shaping a future environment that leverages
its=20
interests with those of allied organizations.
