TITLE: Director, Project MUSE=AE

Position description:
The Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a highly
organized=20
individual with exceptional leadership and communications
skills=20
to direct Project MUSE (http://muse.jhu.edu). Project
MUSE is a=20
renowned online database of more than 300 journals in the=20
humanities and social sciences from 60 not-for-profit
publishers,=20
sold to academic libraries through institutional site
licenses.
The Director, who will report to the Director of The
Johns=20
Hopkins University Press, will lead a staff of approximately
25=20
responsible for all operations of Project MUSE, including
sales=20
and marketing, publishing technologies, user services,
and=20
business administration. The Director will also work with
the=20
Muse Advisory Board, a 10-member group of licensor
publishers and=20
librarians.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Director will constantly review and refresh the shared
vision=20
of Project MUSE among its diverse constituencies in
scholarly=20
publishing - scholars, librarians, and publishers. He/she
will=20
lead the design, development, and implementation of a
strategic=20
plan to achieve objectives identified. The Director will
lead=20
product development activities and functionality
improvement=20
plans, and proactively seek new revenue opportunities and
cost=20
control initiatives. He/she will work collaboratively with
the=20
Muse Advisory Board of publishers and librarians, and
will=20
develop and maintain long-term relationships with
publishers.=20
He/she will also create and negotiate institutional site
licenses=20
and content licenses, and represent Project MUSE to the
scholarly=20
community.
Work Experience / Abilities Required:
- Sincere interest in and commitment to creating
sustainable=20
models of scholarly communication for publishers and
librarians.
- At least 10 years' experience managing complex products
with=20
diverse constituencies. Experience in online database
publishing=20
for the academic library market preferred.
- Ability to drive revenue through the development of
long-term=20
relationships with customers. Significant experience in
contract=20
development and negotiation.
- Professional and diplomatic communication skills, verbal
and=20
written. Experience in a partnership development or=20
customer-relationship sales position.
- Excellent business and analytical skills. At least five
years'=20
experience managing a business with a significant-sized
staff and=20
a budget above $5 million. Master's Degree in Business=20
Administration and/or Library Science preferred.
