The recently released 2006 edition of Journal Citation
Reports by
Thomson ISI places AGU journals among the best in Earth and
space
sciences. The top 10 journals listed under the Geosciences,
Multidisciplinary category include four AGU publications:
Global
Biogeochemical Cycles (3.796 impact factor),
Paleoceanography
(3.018 impact factor), Journal of Geophysical Research
(2.800
impact factor) and Geophysical Research Letters (2.602
impact
factor).
AGU journals performed well in several other categories:
Global
Biogeochemical Cycles ranks second in Meteorology and
Atmospheric
Sciences; Paleoceanography is first in Paleontology and
third in
Oceanography; Water Resources Research places third in Water
Resources and fourth in Limnology.
Finally, for the 9th consecutive year, Reviews of Geophysics
is
the most cited journal in Geochemistry and Geophysics, with
an
impressive impact factor of 8.375.
Impact factors determine how often work published in
peer-reviewed journals is cited by other researchers. They
are
viewed as an important measurement of the quality of the
material
published in a peer-reviewed journal and by extension of the
prominence of the journal itself.
