A Resolution of the Greater Western Library Alliance
* Whereas the American Association for the Advancement of
Science
(AAAS) has made a recent decision to discontinue its
participation in
JSTOR with future issues of its premier publication,
Science; and
* Whereas Science is an outstanding source of high-quality,
vetted
information on all areas of science the inclusion of which
enhances
the value, breadth, and quality of the JSTOR database; and
* Whereas the decision to discontinue Science participation
in JSTOR
is a decision that is in conflict with AAAS' mission,
advancing
science, serving society; and
* Whereas JSTOR has been a singular success in the academy
and with
researchers in meeting the needs of librarians, scholars,
and
publishers and which offers a rich, elegant, and robust
platform for
cross-disciplinary discovery and integration of content;
and
* Whereas AAAS is a non-profit, membership-based
organization; and
* Whereas the withdrawal of future issues of Science from
JSTOR would
be an action which hurts and diminishes the value and
contribution of
both Science and JSTOR to researchers, the academy, and
society;
Be it Hereby Resolved that the membership of the Greater
Western
Library Alliance (GWLA) expresses its disagreement to AAAS
with its
decision withdraw future issues of Science from JSTOR and
that GWLA
urge AAAS to reconsider its decision with particular
attention and
consideration to the damage such action would be to the
mission and
purpose of AAAS.
This resolution was approved by a unanimous vote of the
Alliance
membership on September 18, 2007.
