| Hi,
I have been looking around for some sort of notes manager/thought mapping tool, not keen on mind maps, and to be honest there isn't that much out there that brings much else to the party. Personal Brain was about the best one I have encountered so far, but it eats memory like there is no tomorrow.
Most of the applications I have come across tend to be just Outliners. Now that got me thinking that I could use MLO and achieve the same results. But, it would be nice to distinguish this sort of thing from ordinary tasks and projects.
I think firstly MLO could benefit from a Notes Entry Item, in other words an entry that is not a task. Just a note entry. There shouldn't be a check box, the only way to remove the item should be delete/archive something along those lines. Clicking on a note item should show the Notes pane, whether that is to the side or to the bottom. Perhaps Notes could even be organised on a separate Tab. So that it keeps tasks and notes apart. Obviously as has already been mentioned, notes format needs to be addressed at some point and refined. Bullet points, font selection that type of thing. But personally for me, I would be quite happy with the notes as they are now, if I could just organise them as notes.
Thought mapping to me is just general sort of brain storming, but I see it could be easily achieved in MLO. Again perhaps the definition of an item as a 'Thought', so its not a task, project or note. From one thought would spring many separate thoughts etc, perhaps a way to link or export these as tasks to the main Outline would be good. Again perhaps these could be on a separate Tab.
Now personally I don't really see that either of these extra parts would really want to be synchronized with the PPC. I can see them mainly living on the Desktop.
To me, not being a developer, it would at first glance look easy to just modify tasks as Notes, Thoughts etc. But then I don't know much about programming. With both of these things, I can achieve it now in MLO as it stands. Although it would be nice if I could separate these in a way, have differentiating items.
Obviously with the Notes management side of things, there has to be a lot to be thought about it overall. But I would of thought perhaps the first step might be to define a specific notes item. Have a place to organise notes etc.
All in all I think MLO could really be expanded in these types of areas, as an Outliner it tends to suit things like this and to be honest its better now than most of the other things available. Just really for ease of use, speed, stability etc. Perhaps these sort of things should be separate add on modules, so that people purchase them if required.
All in all I am just thinking out loud again, but to me I have searched for both a Notes organiser and Thought mapping tool. So far I haven't been very impressed with what I have seen, in essence I can adapt MLO to these things now and better. But it is not specifically designed to address these areas, if it was then I could see MLO advancing into other markets.
All the best
Steve.

I'd be interested to hear why you are not keen on mind
maps.
Thanks,

Steve,
I agree about the mind maps. I just find them too clunky -
to use a
technical term.
I'm thinking that it might make more sense for me to keep
notes
separate from tasks so I'm using something else - perhaps
with a link
in the MLO notes to it. EverNote comes to mind - it doesn't
organize
notes graphically but it lets you tag them and search any
way you want
and it's great for capturing pix or web pages. It even
recognizes text
in pictures.

Or there are outline/note takers that have more formatting
than MLO.

Quite simply, I take advantage of the fact that undated items go to the top of the To Do list (some may disagree with this functionality). I have an everlasting undated item called "Reference Information" that I use for miscellaneous notes, user IDs, passwords, a temporary contact, etc. By keeping it at the top, it's easy to access. It's a pretty bare-bones approach, but it serves its purpose.
