We've had to do the same for News Contribution from remote
sites, when
mpeg-2 is just too big. We're having to FTP to the TV folks
over a 2Mbps
satellite IP link - thats closer to 1.8Mbps.
We have time constraints - ie the event finishes, we get a
rough tape edit
from the broadcast truck as a line feed, which we encode
live to a file,
that we then ftp to news. We just use the
"standard" 2Mbps PAL profile in
WM encoder. Nothing flash. The News folks conform it to
their requirements
anyway, so we try to keep things simple and as
"mainstream" as possible.
Typically we get the file ftp'ed in 20 minutes from memory.
The whole cycle
takes about an hour (we often do 2 or 3 News rooms). It sure
beats a 3-5
hour motorcycle ride through the mountains and means the
event folks get
the Saturday News instead of Sunday.
The process is a little stressful, but our ability to do
this is starting
to win jobs for us.

IMHO WMV is not an acceptable solution until it can deliver
correct colors without users having to go through VirtualDub
or other tools to convert the colorspace.
I noticed two color space converter filters in the WME, but
they seem to have little or no effect and there is no
configuration for them - maybe Ben can shed some light upon
what they do and when we can expect correct colors from WM?

Wow - TCP accelerated and not regular old FTP I trust? Any reason why you are not using a one-way UDP delivery mechanism?

WMV itself offers straight up 4:2:0 8-bit color - it's
really up to the app to make sure it's handling decode
correctly (way too many force RGB decode). With VC-1 we
even support colorimetery parameters, so it can be flagged
for 601/709.
Where do you see color space converter filters in WME? Do
you mean the DirectShow filter plug-ins? If so, those
aren't shipped with the tool, but are something that's
installed on your machine from something else.
