I would like to see something like automatic subscribing to
an entire
directory. For example I would like to be automatically
subscribed to
all entries in /weblogs/ceronman.

I think SQLite is perfect for this task. The database schema
is really
simple and the data won't be too big. I also believe that,
in this
case,  SQLite will be faster than any other client-server
database
engine and easier to maintain. A point of comparison could
be mailman
which doesn't use any database backend and it's uses for
mailing lists
with more than half a million subscribers.
