1) DULANEY ON CERTS
By Emmett Dulaney

COMPTIA EXAMS ROLL WITH THE UPDATES
Have you been to CompTIA's site lately? You may have noticed
that
when you try to access any of the CompTIA certification exam

objectives on the site, this paragraph appears:

"CompTIA is constantly reviewing the content of our
exams and updating
test questions to be sure our exams are current and the
security of
the questions is protected. When necessary, we will publish
updated
exams based on existing exams objectives. Please know that
all
related exam preparation materials will still be
valid."

The concept of a rolling update -- the practice of replacing

questions on older technologies with new ones -- isn't new,
and
offers a great deal of flexibility as well as time and cost
savings.

Here's a simplified example: Suppose an exam has an
objective of
"Troubleshoot operating systems." The last
revision of many CompTIA
exams occurred several years ago and -- at that time -- it
would've
been common to expect an administrator to know how to
troubleshoot
Windows 98 and Windows 2000, as well as Windows XP.

As times have changed, the support for older operating
systems has
waned. CompTIA can keep the same objective, but remove the
questions
relating to the two older operating systems in exchange for
ones
related to Vista.

As long as these are the only changes made, we avoid the
need to
go through another round of beta testing and exam revision,
and
the exams continue to be available and relevant.

THREE WINDOWS SERVER 2008 EXAMS LIVE
Microsoft went live with three Windows Server 2008 exams
last week:

 - Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory
(70-640)
   h
ttp://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-640.mspx

 - Configuring Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure
(70-642)
   h
ttp://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-642.mspx

 - Configuring Windows Server 2008 Applications
Infrastructure (70-643)
   h
ttp://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-643.mspx

All three are Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist
(MCTS) exams.

The Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) exams on
similar
topics -- 70-646 (Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator)
and
70-647 (Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator) --
are
expected to go live in April.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: 'THE SHAREPOINT SHEPHERD'S GUIDE FOR END
USERS'
This week's book isn't really a book in the usual sense, but
a
collection of step-by-step instructions for 116 tasks that
end
users might do, with the content designed to be licensed to

organizations for internal use.

"The SharePoint Shepherd's Guide for End Users" by
Robert Bogue, is
now available here:
http://www.lulu.c
om/content/2071084

Priced at $34.99, it's 377 pages of solid information. The
table of
contents can be found on the book's Web site at lulu.com.
There's
also a companion Web site where you'll find a sample task.
http://www.sharepoi
ntshepherd.com

I highly recommend "The SharePoint Shepherd's Guide for
End Users"
for that growing number of administrators who've found
SharePoint
to be a service they regularly support.

2) ZUBAIR'S TIP O' THE WEEK: OUTLOOK 2003: CHANGING DEFAULT
LOCATION
FOR SAVED FILES

QUESTION:
How can I change the default location of the folder where
Outlook 2003
saves attachments and e-mail messages?

ANSWER:
The default location for saving attachments and e-mail
messages in
Outlook 2003 is the My Documents folder of the individual
who's doing
the saving. To modify the default location, you can edit the
registry.
Here are the steps:

 1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).

 2. Go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0OutlookOpt
ions.

 3. On the Edit menu, click New and then select String
Value.

 4. Type DefaultPath and press Enter.

 5. Double-click the DefaultPath entry you just created. In
the Value
data box, type the full path to the folder where you
want your
attachments and e-mail messages to be saved by default.
Click OK.

 6. Close the registry editor.

The next time you save an attachment or an e-mail message,
it will
default to the new location.

*2620 Won't Recognize Added WIC* (Cisco -- Real World
Forum)

HexOffender writes:

"I have an EOL 2620 that I want to test a bonded T1
from our ISP. I
added a new WIC, a 1DSU-T1 V2. Show diag shows the card, but
IOS can't
see the interface. It is running IOS 12.3(25). I believe
that is the
last version supported for this router. Is there any way to
make this
card work on the router?"

*DNS Cache Problem* (Microsoft -- Real World Forum)

atmenner76 writes:
"I have two computers networked to share an Internet
connection, both
running XP Pro. I cannot flush the DNS cache with the
command prompt
on the computer with the modem attached. I also cannot flush
the DNS
cache using the command promt. When I try to repair the
network it
also says clearing of the DNS cache could not be completed.

The problem started when my computer caught a virus and I
had to flush
out the entire system. I can search the Internet on one of
the
computers but not on the other. Both computers attach
through the
modem so I don't know what the problem is but I think that
if I fix the
DNS cache problem, then my Internet connection may work
again."

*Show Interface Question* (Cisco -- Real World Forum)

joey_corleone writes:
"I am wondering how the 'Last input, output' counters
work on switch
interfaces. I am very confused at the moment, and hope
somebody can
clear this up for me. According to the documentation I have
read from
Cisco, it simply is showing you the last time in
hours:minutes:seconds
since a 'packet' was successfully transmitted or received on
an
interface. That seems to make sense, except that I am on a
purely
Layer 2 switch (Cisco 2950), so it processes frames on its
switch
interfaces not packets. Anyway, I don't understand how in
many cases
the 'Last input' can be 'never,' but the output can be
something other
than never..."

*Necessary Equipment To Get Started* (Cisco -- Other Forum)

crunchyhippo writes:
"I'm getting going with the CCVP, and I need to know
what equipment I
should get to get me on my way. I'm trying not to get
overwhelmed with
the new acronyms and equipment terminology, though I know
some of it.
I need voice-enabled routers, T1/FXO/FXS ports and the right
switches
for voice -- all without costing me the shirt off my back.
Is anyone
able to assist with this?"
