HP Laserjet 3150 Boot ROM

My lightly used 3150 is now deceased. I press the "reset" (stop) key
and the display reads: "BOOT ROM 5/22/99 Ready for Download".
Searching the forums here and a direct HP inquiry has told me that the
firmware is no longer available except for $$$.
I am not even sure that a new firmware load would solve the problem.
Any help would be appreciated. This is used in a Senior Citizens
Internet Mentoring Center and is missed.
