HP R40 .. error message: "Scanner system failure...." Fix?

Hi,
I'm new to this group so pardon any ignorance on my part... thanks.
I have an HP R40 deskjet all-in-one unit which has done a super job
for several years. Recently though it is very difficult to get it to
do a "copy". It always prints from the PC just fine but most of the
time when I go to make a copy it will display the error message on
the LCD display: "Scanner system failure. Power off and on again";.

Well that never works anymore. I have to remove the power supply lead
from the back and leave it unplugged for hours. Then when I plug it
back in it will usually work just fine. If not used for some time it
will again give the same error message so seems the only procedure
that helps is as described above but must be unplugged for quite a
long time. Once you get it working it will usually make as many
copies as you want.

Checked and tried all the tips on the HP website and a on-line "chat"
with their support people but with no resolution other than
replacement or costly repair.

Being an electronics tech, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or
hints as to how to "dig in" to this unit and perform a repair. Seems
that it can't be terribly serious if it resumes normal function after
the above described procedure.

I have no diagram etc for the unit but any support as to how I may
resolve this is much appreciated!

There are no service guides, HP is nice enough to keep those internal. You
need to clean the scanner, same as doing the G85. Lift the scanner cover and
remove it by pulling up and set aside. In the channel where it came out are
2 wells with torx screws, remove those. Open the front like you are going to
change ink and reach just behind the ends/corners of the control panel
bottom where you will feel a tab on each side (plastic). lightly push back
and up on them and it will release the front of the bezel that holds the
glass then lift the whole bezel and glass by the sides and off. With the
underside showing clean the glass with a good window cleaner, preferably
Windex and get it perfectly clean including and especially where the white
strip with the little HP logo is. Lightly lube the carriage rod with light
machine oil on your finger working a light coat all the way down. Clean the
encoder wheel at the back of the carriage drive motor - should be the upper
left corner of the scanner unit. Look into the scanner slot with a light and
see if the 45 degree mirror is dirty. If so you can pop the lid off the
scanner and clean it carefully and perfectly with swabs dampened lightly
with windex then a dry one to get rid of the streaks. If the mirror is clean
leave it alone. If you cleaned it then put the cover back on the black
scanner unit then put the bezel and glass unit back on and lightly snap
down - leave the screws out until you are sure it works ok. The glass has to
be in place as the scanner zeros to the HP logo under the glass.

That should do it. If not go back and reclean also make sure the belt is on
properly and not slacking. worst case is a bad scanner unit but rare.

Once it works ok put the screws back in, close the top and put the cover
assy back on and go another 5 or 6 yrs. Of course the printer section will
need cleaning well before that but why mess with it now. Also note that I
repair these on a ship-in/ship-out basis in the US as well, flat rate plus
parts if needed and I go through the whole machine.
