I should have remembered this sooner. You have to init the
locale.

By default python runs with the C locale. See
http://pysvn.tigris.org/svn/pysvn/trunk
/pysvn/Extension/Source/wb_main.py
which contains the function initLocale() that I use to get
the
working on any platform.
