The bug is in wxPython by the looks of it.

What I'm not clear on is that you said that you are using wx
2.8
yet the .so is for wx 2.6.

I have not tested with wxPython 2.8 but know that wxPython
2.6 works on
Fedora, Mac and Windows.

when I get some free time I'll install wxPython 2.8 and see
what happens
on a Fedora 7 system.

Yes, I was astonished too.

In my /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages there are
- wx-2.6-gtk2-unicode  and
- wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode

The wx.pth-file contains
wx-2.8-gtk2-unicode
so wx should fetch wx-2.8

My package manager tells me that I cannot delete wx-2.6
because
svn-workbench (and other programs) depends on 2.6.

Maybe this information can help.

wxPython supports side-by-side installation. I select 2.6 by
using  
this code fragment:

# make sure that we get 2.6 and not an earlier version
try:
     import wxversion
     wxversion.select('2.6')
except:
     pass

Are you using the packaged version or using a source kit?
If you are using a packaged version what does the packager
have to say
about the problem you are having?

I use workbench on fedora every day with wx2.6 and have
never seen  
this problem.

I do not have a ubuntu system to test on which limits how
helpful I  
can be.
