I solved my problem by using the Eclipse version from the Eclipse web site itself instead of using the Eclipse version from the Ubuntu package.

That would be an error in your current Eclipse configuration having nothing to
do with Subclipse. If you tried to install any plug-in via the update manager you will find that you get the same error.
You can try running Eclipse with the -clean option. Also try checking for updates. The Patch 3 was a recent update though.
