fetcher.rb - error (zlib) on SUSE

hi folks!

i got a rather nasty problem installing and running RoR on
SUSE linux.
at first, the distro is suse 9.3 with all required stuff
installed
(and trust me, i'm running RoR on several other distros
without the
slightest problem) - but i can't install gems without root
permissions
since i always get the following:

/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/remote_fetcher.rb
:4:in
`require': no such file to load -- zlib (LoadError)
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/
remote_fetcher.rb:4
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/
source_index.rb:8:in `require'
        from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/
source_index.rb:8
        from
/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:504:in
`require'
        from
/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:504
        from /usr/local/bin/gem:9:in `require'
        from /usr/local/bin/gem:9

zLib is installed perfectly fine via yast and everything
works neat
once i'm root, but since the system is for other users, too,
i don't
want everyone to be root ; )

anyone an idea for me? any help appreciated...
