Posting problem with net/http, can't post to self host from controller?

I am constructing a controller that receives an xml string
in the
request.env["RAW_POST_DATA"].

Since this is not a regular form post, to test it, I
construct the xml
string then use the net/http class to post it to my
controller.

The weird thing is, this method works fine from the console,
but the
post simply stalls and times out if the same code is called
from
within a controller.  And I believe it only stalls if the
site I'm
trying to post to is the same domain I'm testing from.

Any explanation for this?
