Just got Cable Modem Internet installed and this is one of
the tests I
have run/ran, This is about half of what the top speed is
"suppose" to
be (9mbps). Now I know practically no one will actually get
to the top
speed, but I was expecting to be somewhat, or a LOT closer
than this.
:-O Any thoughts? Other than that, it's WAY faster than
the DSL I was
using!

In Sweden, with my ISP Comhem [owned by Carlyle group and
its cronies BTW ]
I am able to get most of my 8Mbs down, and most of the time
1,1 Mbps up.

However, a professor at a dept I serve, recently got 24Mbps
adsl to his house,
and complained that he wasn't able to get more than about
half of that any
time of day/night.

With that said, don't expect to much, the speed depends on
so much, like how
long you're from a telestation, quality of cabling, time of
day, even the
cable modem brand may affect.

However, if you regularly don't get more than half, or
less, you pay for, I'd
have a talk with my ISP.

You might want to check the applet available on <http://tptest.se/>,
specifically <http://tptest.se/documents/tptest/klient/tpte
st5_0_1-setup.exe>.
For you savvy in speaking Swedish, the applet connects to a
server of you
choice and measures the up and down speed. The server
preloaded in the applet
are focused on Sweden, but it's possible to add you own.

Tptest.se is an affiliate to the Swedish National Board for
Consumer Policies.
The applet itself should be fairly easy to use, althugh
it's in Swedish AFAIR.

I have tried the servers on there. In fact did it a minute
or so ago.
Getting a little bit below half the speed according to the
tests on
there. If I was getting these speeds and paying for the
4MBPS service I
would be happy, but I feel if one is paying for 9MBPS
service, at the
very least consistantly hit at least 7MBPS. IMO of course!
Thanks!

It's very, very difficult to find any speed tests that will
reliably
test connections over 4 Mb, I've found. I have a 6 Mb
cable modem at
home, and rarely see more than 3-4 Mb on any speed test.
But there are
a number of sites I can routinely download from at a full 6
Mb. At
least 95% of sites never reach that kind of speed though,
and I'm sure
it's typically due to the other end's connectivity. I'd
do a lot of
downloading before you come to the conclusion that your
connection isn't
really 9 Mb. I'd also check with your ISP to see if they
have a speed
test site on their network, as anything that takes the
Internet as a
whole out of the equation will be much more reliable.
Granted that
doesn't test their uplinks to the Internet, but it should
show how much
you can push down your pipe.

Other things to look at, if you can't even get 9 Mb from
your ISP's
network, is the quality of router or firewall you're using
(if any), and
any interface issues, like high error rates, any duplex
mismatches, etc.
