Google
for Shelaunch for one (free!) way of turning old 9x machines into useful TC
devices.
We're like that here too. Over the
years our server rooms has somehow transformed into a cornucopia of obsolete,
but working, hardware repository - you never know when you're going to need an
old AT-type PSU, or the odd 2GB hd or whatever Mac or
first-generation pentium... I've used some of the older P1/133 for building
firewall appliances with mainly Smoothwall softs. We also have old
P3/500-boxes running NT4 and multimillion-SEK analytical instruments in
mission-critial setups... So I know exactly whereof you
speaketh.
Besides, the best recycling method is to actually
reuse old hardware, not tossing it in the garbage. Unless they're
irreparable broken, in which case you can scavenge still working
parts.
How
do you practically convert a useless old win9x-box to a TS-client/surfstation?
Any particular procedure?
"I'd ignore win9x altogether unless is mission critical in some
way."
of course it is.... it's
cheap ( like our users )
It's a shame as these old boxes are
really useful as TS clients and the odd bit of personal surfing. No need to
repair them . once they die then they get chucked into the recycling pile.
I don't really want to give
the users the ability to surf via the TS box. I'll ghost a couple of images
with flash, adobe etc. already installed

Win 98
Win9x (and most of NT4) has been
pretty dead over here for the last six to seven years. The cost to
fix the problems on win9x greatly exceeds the cost to just reformat and
install a newer OS (if hardware supports it).
I'd ignore win9x altogether,
unless is mission critical in some way.
