SDL support?

Forgive the silly/newbie question, but I see
"--with-sdl" as
a configuration option for wxWidgets/wxPython.  I haven't
found any documentation on this, so I need ask: what can I
do using this (instead of X11+GTK?)  Is there some place
I can look for more information?

Currently only the SDL audio library is used as one of the
back-ends for 
wxSound on the unix builds.

Thanks.  I truly didn't expect the graphics library to run
on top of SDL, but it was worth asking
