Thanks for the test case. This is now fixed in SVN. The
problem was that 
controls loaded from XRC weren't getting allocated the right
mark 
functions to protect related items from GC. This would have
affected 
quite a lot of classes, so should fix numerous possible
crashers when 
using XRC.

I also corrected the documentation to show that any ruby
object can be 
used as item_data (as with other similar classes)
