Thanks Alex -
     I did try to build WxWidgets and during configuration
it complained 
about not finding a recent enough version of GTK.  If you
know a quick 
fix for that issue (command line switch for configure?) that
would be 
great, but I think it's simply time I shell out for a new OS
version.

It shouldn't be looking for gtk on OS X, that's for Linux.
Is there 
--with-gtk in your configure flags? Check you're using the
right 
./configure switches from
